Lines become fills and

chaos becomes characters.

starting point

The habit of sketching while on the phone

As the child of a cartoonist and having started my career as an illustrator, my artistic heritage is deeply ingrained.

However, when I transitioned to UX design, I largely neglected my artistic skills. Despite this, I discovered that I was still drawn to doodling and found myself constantly sketching while on the phone.

Overpainting and a new passion for color

Back in 2017, I discovered how well-suited the iPad was for drawing and painting, and I started using it to transform my outline-based phone drawings into filled-shapes illustrations. The result was a collection of 30 colorful artworks that blend character design with an abstract twist, blurring the lines between living beings and inanimate objects.

As I worked on these illustrations, I discovered a newfound passion for color. With outlines out of the picture, the colors took center stage and became even more impactful. I delved deeper into the world of color, experimenting with different themes and schemes for each character.

Colors exceeding the printable range

While I was pleased with the final result of my artwork, I realized that they were not suitable for mass printing or sale in poster shops due to the colors exceeding by far the printable range of print on demand services.

Nonetheless, I was still determined to showcase my work and decided to display them as prints at the Berlin art fair. To maximize the color impact, I utilized special photo paper, and visitors were indeed impressed with the vivid colors, commenting, "Your colors pop!"

However, due to the high production costs and the substantial effort required to manage a booth at art fairs, I eventually made the decision to set aside the artworks.

The unparalleled benefits of NFTs

The digital medium provides the most effective way to showcase the aforementioned extreme color-themed artworks and notably since the advent of NFT technology, there is simply no superior form to publish my work. The advantages of NFTs, including direct ownership control, cross-platform interoperability, and the ability to bundle artwork series into collections, are truly unparalleled.

In 2020, I diligently prepared my abstract character designs to be published as a collection titled "Complex Characters."

Characters frozen in custodial wallet

After reaching out to several NFT launchpads, FTX, a prominent cryptocurrency platform at the time, selected the Complex Characters collection to be featured on their NFT marketplace.

Unfortunately, shortly after the launch, the FTX platform collapsed due to a liquidity crunch, resulting in the collection receiving only a brief period of attention before fading from the spotlight. The custodial FTX wallet where my collection was intended to be stored temporarily during the launch has since become inaccessible, effectively leaving the NFTs frozen in that wallet, yet they remain visible on Opensea.

Complex Characters reloaded

Another advantage of digital media is that the raw data is not lost, providing the opportunity to publish a significantly revised, improved, and enhanced version of the collection.

Currently, I am actively exploring various options for promotion and launch possibilities.

Profile pictures, also known as PFPs, have become popular non-fungible tokens (NFTs) thanks to the emergence of collections like CryptoPunks in 2021. This trend has since been amplified by the popularity of other collections such as Bored Ape Yacht Club (BAYC), Hashmasks, Meebits, and World of Women. NFT PFPs are not limited to the crypto community, as they have also been embraced by celebrities and companies worldwide.
